Giant sponsored triathlete Tim van Berkel is Australia's latest Ironman champion, taking victory in the 2022 Ironman Australia event held in Port Macquarie. Tim claimed the victory in a time of 8:15:11, it was his first victory at Port Macquarie after having finished second, third, fourth and seventh twice at the same event in the past. The win held strong sentimental value for Tim, as he spent a large part of his life living in Port Macquarie, taking victory in front of many of his close family and friends.
Tim used all of his Ironman racing experience to keep composed on the bike leg after fellow race favourite Josh Amberger took an early lead, having exited the water first with an almost 4 minute lead over the chasing pack. Wet conditions meant athletes had to be careful on the bike course and Tim rode a smart bike leg on his Trinity Advanced Pro equipped with an Aero WheelSystem from CADEX Cycling. During the last part of the bike leg Tim managed to pull back a couple of minutes on Josh Amberger who remained out in front heading into the second transition.
Out onto the run course and it was Tim who chipped into the lead quickly, as he overtook Josh for the lead at around the 14km mark and never looked back on his way to victory, his time of 8:15:11 was exactly 11 minutes ahead of Josh Amberger who held onto second place head of Jack Moody who rounded out the podium in third.
Tim will now turn his focus this season to the Asia-Pacific Ironman Championship held in Cairns this June. For full results from Ironman Australia, visit here.
